The Story

From Agadir to Marrakech via the Sahara

This four-day private Morocco tour is the most compact way to experience the south of the country between Agadir and Marrakech. The route crosses the Anti-Atlas mountains via Taroudant, takes you to the UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou kasbah and Ouarzazate, follows the Rose Valley east through Erfoud to the Sahara at Merzouga, then returns west via the Todra Gorges, the Dades Valley, Skoura palm grove, and the High Atlas Mountains.

Each day is full but designed to maximize the experience: an evening visit at Aït Ben Haddou, a night at Ouarzazate (the "Hollywood of Morocco"), a sunset camel trek into the orange dunes of Erg Chebbi, a night in a comfortable Sahara desert camp, a walk inside the Todra Gorges between canyon walls, and the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass at 2,260 meters on the final day to Marrakech.

You'll travel in a private air-conditioned vehicle with your own English-speaking driver, stay in carefully chosen kasbah-style hotels and a Sahara desert camp, and end the tour in Marrakech — perfectly positioned for departure from Marrakech-Menara Airport or to extend your stay in the Red City.

Day 01

Agadir → Taroudant → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate

Pick-up from your Agadir hotel or Agadir Al Massira Airport in the morning and begin the drive east across the Anti-Atlas mountains. First stop at Taroudant — a historic walled town nicknamed the "Grandmother of Marrakech" — for a walk inside the ramparts and the local souks. Continue through Taliouine (saffron country) and Taznakht (Berber carpet weavers) into the southern plains. Arrive in the Aït Ben Haddou region by late afternoon for a sunset visit to the UNESCO-listed mud-brick kasbah where Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia were filmed. Continue to Ouarzazate — the "Hollywood of Morocco" — for overnight in a comfortable kasbah-style hotel.

Day 02

Ouarzazate → Rose Valley → Erfoud → Merzouga Sahara

After breakfast, leave Ouarzazate and drive east through the Skoura palm grove and the famous Rose Valley (El Kelaa M'Gouna) — Morocco's rose capital, especially fragrant in April and May during the harvest. Continue along the southern road through the Dades region, then south to Erfoud — the gateway to the desert, famous for its fossil workshops and date markets. Arrive at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes in the late afternoon. At sunset, ride a camel into the dunes as the sand turns from gold to pink to deep orange. Dinner under the stars at your comfortable Sahara desert camp with Berber music drifting around the fire.

Day 03

Merzouga → Rissani → Todra Gorges → Dades Valley

Sunrise over the dunes followed by breakfast at the camp. Leave the desert and stop at Rissani — the old Berber market town and ancestral home of the Alaouite dynasty, famous for its lively Sunday souk and traditional date markets. Continue along the "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs" to the spectacular Todra Gorges where canyon walls rise 300+ meters above a narrow stream — time to walk inside the canyon between the cliffs. Continue to the Dades Valley with its red rock formations and famous "monkey fingers" rocks for overnight in a kasbah-style hotel built into the valley walls, with dinner served on a terrace overlooking the cliffs.

Day 04

Dades → Skoura → Aït Ben Haddou → High Atlas → Marrakech

After breakfast, drive west through the Skoura palm grove with a visit to the famous Kasbah Amridil — one of the most beautiful kasbahs in southern Morocco. Continue to Aït Ben Haddou for a proper walk through the UNESCO-listed ksar in the morning light — the perfect time before the tour buses arrive. Cross the High Atlas via the spectacular Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 meters — the highest mountain pass in North Africa — with sweeping panoramas in every direction and stops at viewpoints over Berber villages perched on the mountainsides. Arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon. End of tour with drop-off at your hotel in Marrakech or directly at Marrakech-Menara Airport.

Frequently Asked

Tour FAQ

Is 4 days enough to do this circuit?
Yes — 4 days is the minimum time for the Agadir-Marrakech southern circuit including the Sahara. It's compact and includes some long driving days (especially Day 1 from Agadir to Ouarzazate at 7–8 hours, and Day 2 from Ouarzazate to Merzouga at 6–7 hours). If you'd prefer a softer pace with extra time in the Sahara or at Aït Ben Haddou, our 5 or 7-day tours from Agadir add nights and slower driving days.
Why does the tour end in Marrakech instead of returning to Agadir?
Ending in Marrakech is the most efficient choice for a 4-day tour — it eliminates a 3-hour transfer day back to Agadir and gives you a full final day arriving at the Red City. Marrakech-Menara Airport has direct flights to most major European cities. If you'd prefer to return to Agadir, we can extend the tour by one day to include the return drive.
When is the Rose Valley most beautiful?
The Rose Valley (El Kelaa M'Gouna) is most spectacular in April and May during the damask rose harvest, when the valley fills with the scent of roses and the annual Rose Festival takes place in mid-May. Outside of this season, you can still visit the rose distilleries and cooperatives to learn about the production of rose water and oil — a major local industry.
Is this tour private?
Yes — 100% private. Just you and your travel companions, your own English-speaking driver/guide, and a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle. No other travelers, no group bus, no fixed group schedule. Daily timing and stops are entirely flexible based on your interests.
Where do we sleep in the Sahara?
The Sahara night is spent in a comfortable desert camp at Erg Chebbi. Each tent is private with comfortable beds, en-suite bathroom (shower and toilet), and a Berber-style lounge area. Dinner is served under the stars with Berber drumming around the fire. Luxury camp upgrades are available on request for an additional fee.
How long is the camel ride?
The sunset camel trek into the dunes takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours — slow, walked pace, led by an experienced Berber camel handler. It's gentle and suitable for beginners. The morning return ride is similar. If you prefer not to ride, we can arrange a 4x4 transfer to the camp instead, and you can still enjoy the sunset and dinner.
Can I add nights in Marrakech at the end?
Absolutely. The tour ends in Marrakech on Day 4, so you can easily add additional nights at the end — a full guided day with a licensed local guide (Bahia Palace, Saadian Tombs, Majorelle Gardens, souks), a cooking class, a day trip to Ourika Valley or Essaouira, or simply more time to enjoy your riad. We can book your extra Marrakech nights for you.
What's the best time of year for this tour?
Morocco is a year-round destination. The best months for this tour are March–May (spring, mild and green — and the Rose Valley harvest in April-May) and September–November (autumn, warm but not extreme). June–August can be very hot in the Sahara and southern valleys (40°C+). December–February brings cooler days, occasional snow on the Atlas pass, and the most atmospheric desert nights — but also the coldest desert evenings (bring layers).
