Tour Overview

A Slower, Richer Sahara Experience

This 4 Days Marrakech to Merzouga Extended Tour is the ideal choice for travelers who want to experience the Sahara without the rush. The route follows the same iconic path as our 3-day classic — High Atlas, Aït Ben Haddou, Dades Valley, Todra Gorges, Erg Chebbi dunes — but with a fourth full day dedicated to the desert and slower stops for the valleys, kasbahs, and local villages along the way.

The slower pace means more time to walk through Skoura's palm grove and its scattered ancient kasbahs, longer stops in the Dades Valley and Todra Gorges, and a full extra day to truly absorb the Sahara atmosphere — visit nomad families, see the Khamlia village, watch sunrise and sunset over the dunes, and enjoy two unhurried mornings in the desert.

Every detail is fully private — your driver/guide, vehicle, and itinerary are exclusively yours. Accommodations are carefully chosen for character and comfort, with one night in a luxury Sahara desert camp featuring private tents with en-suite bathrooms.

A flexible private route — start dates, accommodations, and daily pace can all be adapted to suit you.

Day 1

Marrakech → Aït Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Skoura → Dades Valley

Pick-up from your accommodation in Marrakech and drive across the High Atlas Mountains via the dramatic Tizi n'Tichka pass. Visit the UNESCO-listed Aït Ben Haddou kasbah — Hollywood's favorite Moroccan film set — then continue to Ouarzazate, the gateway to the Sahara. In the afternoon, take a slow walk through the Skoura palm grove and its scattered ancient kasbahs, before arriving in the Dades Valley for an evening among the red rock formations. Overnight in a local hotel or auberge.

Day 2

Dades Valley → Todra Gorges → Merzouga Desert Camp

After breakfast, take time to explore the Dades landscapes — including the famous "monkey fingers" rock formations and a short walk between the canyon walls. Continue to the magnificent Todra Gorges, where towering rock walls rise more than 300 meters above a narrow stream, with time to walk inside the canyon. Travel through palm groves and small desert towns toward Merzouga. At sunset, ride a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes for an unforgettable evening — traditional dinner under the stars, Berber music around the fire, and overnight in a comfortable luxury Sahara desert camp.

Day 3

Merzouga Desert — Full Day Experience

Wake up early to watch sunrise over the dunes, then enjoy a slow breakfast at the camp. Spend the day exploring the Sahara at your own pace: a 4x4 excursion to nomad families, a visit to the village of Khamlia (famous for its Gnawa music tradition), the salt flats and fossil quarries, or simply free time at the camp pool with views of the dunes. Optional sand-boarding or quad biking can be arranged. Overnight in the desert area — either a second night in the luxury camp or a comfortable nearby hotel/auberge with pool, depending on your preference.

Day 4

Merzouga – Rissani – Nkob – Ouarzazate – Marrakech

After breakfast in the Sahara Desert, your journey continues west toward Marrakech through some of southern Morocco’s most authentic and changing landscapes. Leaving Merzouga behind, you will first pass through Rissani, a historic desert town known for its traditional market and ancient caravan atmosphere. The road then leads through the vast volcanic landscapes and palm groves of the Draa Valley, crossing small Berber villages and oasis towns on the way to Nkob, famous for its kasbahs and peaceful desert scenery. Continuing toward Ouarzazate, often called the gateway to the Sahara, you will enjoy beautiful views of rugged mountains, rocky plateaus, and hidden valleys before crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Scenic stops will be made along the route for photos, coffee, and to admire the ever-changing landscapes before arriving in Marrakech in the evening and transfer to your riad or hotel.

Frequently Asked

Tour FAQ

What's the difference between the 3-day and 4-day Sahara tours?
The 3-day tour is the most efficient route — same iconic stops but with longer driving days. The 4-day extended tour adds an extra night and a slower pace: more time in the Skoura palm grove, longer stops in Dades and Todra Gorges, and a full free day in the Sahara to visit nomad families, Khamlia village, and enjoy the desert atmosphere unhurriedly.
Is the luxury desert camp included?
Yes — one night in a luxury Sahara desert camp is included as standard. Each tent is private with its own en-suite bathroom, comfortable beds, traditional Moroccan furnishings, and a Berber-style lounge area. If you'd like a second luxury camp night instead of staying at a nearby hotel on Day 3, we can easily arrange that — just let us know.
What happens during the free desert day?
Day 3 is yours to design. Popular activities include a 4x4 excursion to nomad families, a visit to Khamlia village (famous for Gnawa music), the salt flats and fossil quarries, sand-boarding or quad biking, or simply enjoying free time at the camp or pool. Your driver-guide can arrange any combination based on your interests.
Is this tour private?
Yes — this tour is 100% private. Just you and your travel companions, your own English-speaking driver/guide, and a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle. No other travelers, no group bus, no fixed group schedule. The pace is yours.
Can the itinerary be customized?
Absolutely. The 4-day program is a flexible base — you can add an extra day in the desert, upgrade to a higher-end luxury camp, change accommodations along the route, or add stops like Erfoud fossils or extra valleys. Tell us your interests and we'll tailor the tour to fit you perfectly.
Is this tour suitable for families or seniors?
Yes — and especially well-suited because of the slower pace. The vehicle is air-conditioned and comfortable, daily distances can be adjusted, and the extra desert day gives children and seniors time to rest at the camp pool. The camel ride in Merzouga is optional and can be replaced with a 4x4 transfer to the desert camp for guests who prefer not to ride.
