Tour Overview

A Day in the High Atlas

Just an hour's drive south of Marrakech, the High Atlas Mountains rise dramatically above the plain — and at their foot lies the Ourika Valley, one of the most beautiful natural escapes in southern Morocco. Cool, green, and crossed by a clear mountain river, the valley is home to traditional Berber villages where life has changed little over centuries.

This private day trip takes you from the red walls of Marrakech to the snow-tinged peaks of the Atlas, with stops along the way to meet a Berber family, share mint tea in a traditional home, walk through small mountain villages, and reach Setti Fatma — the end of the road, where seven waterfalls cascade down the mountainside (an optional hike can take you up to the falls).

It's the perfect break from the city — fresh mountain air, the sound of running water, friendly faces, and a long lunch on a riverside terrace with your feet practically in the river. Easy to combine with another day trip during your Marrakech stay.

Day Programme

Hour by Hour

A flexible timeline — pick-up times and stops can be adapted to your preferences and pace on the day.

08:30

Hotel Pick-Up in Marrakech

Your private driver-guide collects you directly from your hotel, riad, or apartment in Marrakech. Comfortable air-conditioned vehicle for the scenic mountain drive ahead.

09:00

Departure South Toward the Atlas

Leave Marrakech heading south through olive groves and small villages. Within 30 minutes the foothills of the Atlas Mountains rise up ahead and the air starts to cool noticeably.

10:00

Stop at an Argan Cooperative or Spice Farm

A short visit to a women's argan cooperative or a roadside spice and medicinal-herb farm — taste argan oil, see traditional production methods, and pick up a few souvenirs if you wish (no obligation to buy).

11:00

Visit a Traditional Berber Village

Stop in a small mountain village and visit a Berber family in their traditional clay-and-stone home. Share mint tea, learn about daily life, see traditional bread baking, and watch how families live in the High Atlas — far from the bustle of Marrakech.

12:00

Drive Deeper Into the Ourika Valley

Continue along the valley road as it follows the Ourika River, with panoramic Atlas views opening up at every bend. In winter the high peaks above are often snow-capped — a striking contrast with the green valley below.

12:30

Arrive at Setti Fatma Village

Reach Setti Fatma — the village at the end of the road, where the famous seven waterfalls cascade down the mountainside. Time for a short walk in the village before lunch.

13:30

Riverside Lunch in the Mountains

Lunch at a traditional riverside restaurant — tables set right beside the rushing Ourika River, with feet practically in the water. Tagine, kebabs, fresh salads, and homemade bread, all with the sound of the river as your soundtrack.

15:00

Setti Fatma Waterfalls Hike (Optional)

After lunch, you can choose to hike up to the first of the seven Setti Fatma waterfalls — about 45 minutes up over rocks (a guide can accompany you for a small fee). If you prefer to skip the hike, relax by the river, browse the village stalls, or enjoy more mint tea.

16:30

Begin the Return Drive

Begin the scenic drive back to Marrakech as the late afternoon light turns the mountains warm orange. Possible photo stops at viewpoints along the way.

17:30

Drop-Off at Your Accommodation

Arrive back in Marrakech in the late afternoon with drop-off at your hotel or riad — refreshed by the mountain air, with plenty of time for an evening in the city.

Frequently Asked

Day Trip FAQ

How far is the Ourika Valley from Marrakech?
The Ourika Valley starts about 30 kilometers south of Marrakech and extends another 30 kilometers up into the High Atlas — Setti Fatma village (the end of the road) is around 65 km away, roughly a 1 to 1.5-hour scenic drive. This is one of the shortest day trips from Marrakech, which makes it perfect for travelers who only have one free day or who want to combine it with another activity.
Will I see snow in the mountains?
From December to March, the high peaks of the Atlas above the Ourika Valley are usually snow-capped, and snow can sometimes reach the upper village areas. The valley floor itself rarely has snow — it stays green and walkable year-round. In winter the contrast between the green valley and the white peaks above is one of the most beautiful sights in Morocco.
Is the waterfall hike difficult?
The hike to the first Setti Fatma waterfall takes about 45 minutes each way and is moderate — there are rocky sections and some scrambling, but no dangerous parts. The hike to the higher waterfalls (up to seven in total) is more challenging and takes a full afternoon. A local guide can be arranged on site for a small fee. If you prefer not to hike, you can enjoy the valley from the river-level cafés and viewpoints instead.
Will I really meet a local Berber family?
Yes — visiting a Berber family in their traditional home is one of the highlights of the day. The families we work with regularly welcome travelers, share mint tea and homemade bread, and (through your guide as translator) chat about daily mountain life. It's a respectful, authentic exchange — not a staged show. There is no obligation to buy anything.
Is this trip suitable for children and seniors?
Yes — Ourika is one of the most family-friendly day trips from Marrakech because the drive is short, the air is cool, and the activities are gentle. Children especially love the river, the optional camel ride at the valley entrance, and meeting the Berber family. The optional waterfall hike is rocky and best for kids aged 8+, but it's entirely optional.
Is lunch included?
Lunch is not included in the tour price, but the riverside lunch at Setti Fatma is one of the highlights of the day. Your driver-guide will recommend several mountain restaurants with tables right by the river. Prices are very reasonable — typically 80–150 MAD per person (around €8–15) for a full tagine lunch with mint tea.
What should I wear and bring?
Comfortable walking shoes (sneakers or hiking shoes if you plan to do the waterfall walk), a light layer or sweater (the mountains are 5–10°C cooler than Marrakech, even in summer), sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, your camera, and some cash for lunch and small purchases. In winter add a warm jacket. Modest clothing is appreciated when visiting the Berber family home.
Can the itinerary be customized?
Yes — every trip is flexible. You can add a camel ride, extend the hike, swap restaurants, combine the trip with a visit to nearby Asni or Imlil (other mountain villages), or add an early dinner with a different family. Just let us know your preferences in advance and we'll build the day around you.
